Intended Audience: This is an introductory level course for medical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, laboratory
supervisors, and laboratory managers. This course is also appropriate for MLS
and MLT students and pathology residents.
Author Information:
Suzanne H. Butch, MA, MLS(ASCP)CMSBB, DLM, is currently working on special projects for the Department of Pathology at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She formerly worked in Quality Assurance in the Department of Pathology and as the Administrative Manager for Healthcare, Blood Bank & Transfusion Service at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She holds a B.S. in Medical Technology from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University, and Certifications as a Specialist in Blood Bank, as a Quality Audit, and as a Diplomate in Laboratory Medicine.
Julia Clendenin is a content and graphics developer. She graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.S. in Literature, Media, and Communication.

Shoolah Escott, MS, MLS(ASCP), works as a biosafety and biosecurity consultant and trainer. She has over 14 years of experience working with the CDC and has experience as a regional coordinator with APHL. Earlier in her career, she was the manager of microbiology at Memorial Hospital in the greater Boston area and, more recently, served as the Biosafety Manager and Alternate Responsible Official for the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory.
Laurie Bjerklie, MA, MLS(ASCP)CM, is
a Lead Education Developer. She earned a B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science
from the University of North Dakota and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction
from Saint Xavier University. She has over 15 years of experience in higher
education and has held program director and faculty positions in both MLT and
MLS programs.
